If you are unaware, many websites are participating an online strike today, January 18th starting midnight ET. There are currently 2 internet bills that is in front of Congress, the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). If and when these bills are passed, it will severely limit the freedom that we have come to love and treasure as an online community. Hundred of websites will be blacked out today to protest the passing of such law and to raise awareness for people to write in to your Congress representatives. Sites such as Wikipedia, Boing Boing, Reddit, and Tucows has blacked out their websites in unison support against the two bills, and other sites like Google, although not blacked out, has blacked out their logo to show support of this movement. Please read up on what you can potentially be losing if when these two bills are passed. If you need more information and want to sign the partition saying no to SOPA and PIPA, please visit Google’s page. If you want to see which websites and companies are participating the black out, you can find more at the SOPA Strike website. These two bills will significant change the internet as we know it today. Please take a moment of your time and get yourself familiarized with what’s going and stand up for what you believe to be right.
